Artist Statement
My abstract paintings explore the ‘unseen’, tapping into a deep interest in psychology, philosophy, consciousness and the connection between them. What we actually see is just ‘the tip of the iceberg’ while there is vastly more, hidden beneath the surface—unseen, unconscious, and unknown—within each of us and within everything.
I build up my paintings layer by layer, mainly using a combination of oil paint with cold wax medium in different ratios to create varying transparencies. To achieve a range of textures and effects, I introduce assorted materials--sand from nearby arroyos, marble dust, metal leaf, imprints of yucca fronds and other organic material—as well as inspiration from poetry and philosophy. Scraping, gouging, and etching with various tools deepens textural interest while also helping to reveal the rich history and storylines that lie below the surface.
Ancient Japanese traditions and concepts have long been an important source of inspiration and influence in my own life and in my creative endeavors. I want my paintings to evoke the beauty in brokenness, in imperfection, in mystery and the unknown. In my painting practice, I seek insight into the complexities of my own essence and into the collective human experience.
