Fragments: Finding Beauty In Brokenness

The paintings in this series were inspired by the traditional Japanese art of kintsugi or kintsukuroi which originated in the 15th century. When a treasured ceramic cup used for tea ceremonies was cracked or broken, rather than being thrown away, it was carefully reassembled and repaired. Gold and other precious metals were used to accentuate the cracks and imperfections instead of disguising them. This art honored the object. Its brokenness was seen as a part of its history and, as a result, became even more valued, more cherished, and more beautiful.

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”

- Leonard Cohen
